My Role As an LSS Pregnancy Counselor

October 16, 2020

I have had the privilege to work as the LSS Pregnancy Counselor in Sioux Falls since July 2020. I have learned so much over these few months. LSS Adoption and Pregnancy Counseling Services are unique, amazing, and consist of three main components:  Adoption Services, Post Legal Adoption Services and Pregnancy Counseling. In my role as a Pregnancy Counselor, I provide services to those facing an unplanned pregnancy. All birth parents receive free, non-judgmental options counseling and decision making services. I am fortunate enough to help clients work through the process of making the best plan for them and their child, which may be an adoption plan or a parenting plan.  Regardless of the plan that is chosen, I provide clients with emotional support for them and their support system, as well as providing clients with community resources to help their individual plan succeed. If an adoption plan is chosen, I assist in developing relationships between the birth parents and the adoptive family.  I can also assist the birth parents in developing a hospital plan, and I collaborate with the hospital staff so that the hospital stay is successful for all parties involved. I am blessed to work with brave and resilient clients who are making life changing decisions.  The need for Adoption and Birthparent services is where LSS started 100 years ago, and although services may look a little different now, we continue to provide these services across the entire state of South Dakota, thankfully even during the pandemic.

It’s OK to Ask for Help!

September 16, 2020

LSS Adoption Services provides counseling, support, and education to birth parents, adoptees, and adoptive parents before, during, and after an adoption. I recently visited with a teen adoptee and helped her obtain non-identifying information on her birth mother. Being a teen in today’s world is hard and having some basic information on her birth mother’s hobbies and interests is helping her in her own identity development. In some cases, therapy or counseling with a mental health therapist would be beneficial. LSS Behavioral Health Services offers a variety of services for individuals, families, couples, and groups. Seeking help for your adopted child, for yourself as an adoptive parent or birth parent is not a sign of weakness. Society may tell you otherwise but seeking help, resources, support, or counseling can be a sign of strength and courage. If you are seeking counseling or therapy, it is important to find a counselor or therapist who is knowledgeable about adoption and loss issues. Here are some tips on selecting a therapist that you may find helpful. https://creatingafamily.org/adoption-category/adoption-blog/a-guide-to-selecting-an-adoption-or-foster-therapist-2/. If you are in the Sioux Falls area, another source of support is a group that gathers monthly called “The Gathering Well.” This group is made up of adoptive and foster families who gather together to support, inspire, and learn from each other. For more information on their meetings, check out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/thegatheringwellsf/. Know that you are not alone and that help is available!

Why Choose LSS When Considering Placing Your Baby for Adoption?

May 16, 2020

Facing an unplanned pregnancy is stressful enough. There are a lot of decisions to be made, so struggling to know who to trust shouldn’t be an additional stress. Often it feels so overwhelming that you just want someone else to take care of everything. Sometimes this opens up the opportunity for coercion to take place. Adoption is a permanent decision, so it is important that clients are fully informed, feel supported ownership of their decision, and feel protected from coercion or exploitation. When you are pregnant, you face many choices. It can be a scary time, especially if the pregnancy is unplanned. Lutheran Social Services offers pregnancy counseling to help in this difficult time.

Choosing Adoption

The choice of adoption is a wonderful gift. While adoption should never be taken lightly, the options for adoption have changed a lot. You may select an adoptive family from our book of profiles. You can meet the adoptive family if you wish. Together, you can both decide the level of contact you would like.

Your counselor will assist you every step of the way. We will walk you through the decision making process and all your options. Our goal is to help you make the decision that is best for you and your baby.

Misconceptions about Open Adoption

July 17, 2017

Here are a few common misconceptions on how open adoptions work.

  1. Open adoption is confusing to the child. This is false! Children growing up in open adoptions do understand the difference between parents and birth parents. In healthy open adoptions, both adoptive and birth parents help define their own roles and responsibilities.
  2. Open adoption is a form of co-parenting. This is false! Open adoption is not shared custody between adoptive and birth parents. Adoptive parents have full legal responsibilities over the child once the adoption is complete.
  3. All open adoptions eventually turn into closed adoptions at some point. This is false! As in any relationship, contact with one another can change as life events happen. It is important that the unique relationships formed through open adoption are recognized and honored. All relationships involve challenges at some point. The key to positive relationships is mutual understanding and respect. When children know their adoption story from the very beginning there is less chance for resentment about being adopted.

Adoptive and birth parents are supported through each stage of the adoption process at LSS. Birth parents receive free options counseling and decision making services. Adoptive parents are provided education to equip them for successful adoptions. For more information on how open adoption works, or for pregnancy counseling services, contact LSS at 605-221-2346, toll free at 888-201-5061, or http://www.LssSD.org.
