Did you know November is National Adoption Month?

November 16, 2020

The month of November is recognized as National Adoption Month. This year’s theme is “Engage Youth: Listen and Learn” and the goal is to raise awareness of children waiting to be adopted. This is an annual campaign sponsored by the Children’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in partnership with the Child Welfare Information Gateway and AdoptUSKids. If you are considering adopting a child through domestic or international adoption, LSS is here to help and support you in your journey. LSS Adoption Services offers free informational packets and meetings for those interested in learning more about the adoption process, requirements, and the different options available in adopting a child.

My Role As an LSS Pregnancy Counselor

October 16, 2020

I have had the privilege to work as the LSS Pregnancy Counselor in Sioux Falls since July 2020. I have learned so much over these few months. LSS Adoption and Pregnancy Counseling Services are unique, amazing, and consist of three main components:  Adoption Services, Post Legal Adoption Services and Pregnancy Counseling. In my role as a Pregnancy Counselor, I provide services to those facing an unplanned pregnancy. All birth parents receive free, non-judgmental options counseling and decision making services. I am fortunate enough to help clients work through the process of making the best plan for them and their child, which may be an adoption plan or a parenting plan.  Regardless of the plan that is chosen, I provide clients with emotional support for them and their support system, as well as providing clients with community resources to help their individual plan succeed. If an adoption plan is chosen, I assist in developing relationships between the birth parents and the adoptive family.  I can also assist the birth parents in developing a hospital plan, and I collaborate with the hospital staff so that the hospital stay is successful for all parties involved. I am blessed to work with brave and resilient clients who are making life changing decisions.  The need for Adoption and Birthparent services is where LSS started 100 years ago, and although services may look a little different now, we continue to provide these services across the entire state of South Dakota, thankfully even during the pandemic.

For more information on LSS Adoption Services or LSS Pregnancy Counseling, please contact LSS at 605-221-2346 or 888-201-5061.

It’s OK to Ask for Help!

September 16, 2020

LSS Adoption Services provides counseling, support, and education to birth parents, adoptees, and adoptive parents before, during, and after an adoption. I recently visited with a teen adoptee and helped her obtain non-identifying information on her birth mother. Being a teen in today’s world is hard and having some basic information on her birth mother’s hobbies and interests is helping her in her own identity development. In some cases, therapy or counseling with a mental health therapist would be beneficial. LSS Behavioral Health Services offers a variety of services for individuals, families, couples, and groups. Seeking help for your adopted child, for yourself as an adoptive parent or birth parent is not a sign of weakness. Society may tell you otherwise but seeking help, resources, support, or counseling can be a sign of strength and courage. If you are seeking counseling or therapy, it is important to find a counselor or therapist who is knowledgeable about adoption and loss issues. Here are some tips on selecting a therapist that you may find helpful. https://creatingafamily.org/adoption-category/adoption-blog/a-guide-to-selecting-an-adoption-or-foster-therapist-2/. If you are in the Sioux Falls area, another source of support is a group that gathers monthly called “The Gathering Well.” This group is made up of adoptive and foster families who gather together to support, inspire, and learn from each other. For more information on their meetings, check out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/thegatheringwellsf/. Know that you are not alone and that help is available!

Adoption: Past, Present, and Future

June 16, 2020

As we look to the 100th year of the LSS Adoption program, I’m infantreflecting on all that I have learned from my time at LSS. A lot has changed since those first days of the “Lutheran Children’s Home Finding Society of South Dakota” in 1920. And in a way, things have almost come full circle. Read the rest of this entry »

Why Choose LSS When Considering Placing Your Baby for Adoption?

May 16, 2020

Facing an unplanned pregnancy is stressful enough. There are a lot of decisions to be made, so struggling to know who to trust shouldn’t be an additional stress. Often it feels so overwhelming that you just want someone else to take care of everything. Sometimes this opens up the opportunity for coercion to take place. Adoption is a permanent decision, so it is important that clients are fully informed, feel supported ownership of their decision, and feel protected from coercion or exploitation. A Reminder of the Best Advice

August 16, 2019

When we see someone struggling, our natural response is to try to help them. There is no moment more true to that than when we see someone we know or love facing an unplanned pregnancy. The first response is to offer them advice. The problem is, often they are inundated with several “helpers” who want to offer their advice, all with various opinions. It’s very difficult to be struggling with a decision and have people all around you giving conflicting advice but not really providing any resources to follow through with that advice. “You’d be a great mom, I’ll help you!” while someone else says, “but what about college, you’ll never be able to go,” or “whatever you do, don’t just ‘give it up.’” The best advice you can truly give them is to refer them to an LSS Pregnancy Counselor, because everyone around them might have an opinion on what they should do, but a Pregnancy Counselor helps THEM decide what THEY should do. Is Adoption Right for You?

May 15, 2019

Is Adoption Right for You? Hope Comes in All Sizes. Picture of a happy toddler with outstretched arms. When you are thinking about adoption, there are a lot of opinions. Lutheran Social Services Adoption Services is experienced. We are based on a long tradition of caring in the best interests of children. When it’s time to discuss adoption, we’re here. We are a licensed agency in South Dakota. Lutheran Social Services can help guide you through the entire process.

Understanding all your Adoption Options

Adoption is a huge decision for any woman. When faced with a pregnancy, you are not ‘giving up’ by choosing adoption. You are actually giving your child a generous gift. You are also giving a gift to their future family. It helps to see adoption that way.

Lutheran Social Services knows the details. We also know the differences. Our job is to help you understand your options and not be overwhelmed. We offer counseling with care and expertise, no matter where you are at in your decision making process.

Birth moms and dads, and adoptive parents should know all their options:

  • Domestic adoption
  • International adoption
  • Identified adoption
  • Contract adoption services

Domestic adoption has a wide range of options. Both parties can determine their level of contact together. Lutheran Social Services domestic adoption services includes:

  • Pre-adoption counseling
  • Home studies
  • Meeting birth parents
  • Placement services
  • Post placement services

International adoption can take place with agencies around the world. Why do some adoptive families choose this type of adoption? Many areas of the world suffer greatly with overpopulation, lack of resources, war and poverty. Adopting internationally is a wonderful way to help a child. Of course, it is also a great gift to an adoptive family with love to share.

Identified adoption is another choice. Identified adoption is when a birth family identifies the adoptive family. It could be a grandmother, family friend or someone else. This decision is usually made prior to coming to Lutheran Social Services. We can help both the birth family and adoptive family. We provide home studies, support and post placement services. We also assist with the laws that apply to a child who is born in a state other than South Dakota.

Contract adoption services are coordinated through various agencies, public or private or attorneys. Because LSS has years of expertise, we can assist in this process. We partner with you to assure the process goes smoothly.

Adoption is not merely open or closed anymore. There are many ways adoptions can take place. We want you to feel comfortable with your choice. We also aim to give every adopted child a home.

The Benefits of Adoption and LSS

Adoption has many benefits. One is providing a loving home to a child. As a birth mother, you can give a great gift of a family to your child with the peace of mind that you are making the best decision. All adoptive families with LSS go through a rigorous home study process. LSS supports you in forming relationships with the family and your child.

It’s important to know that Lutheran Social Services stays involved. We provide ongoing support and guidance. We are there before, during and after an adoption. We also host educational and support meetings throughout the year.

May 9, 2019

When you are pregnant, you face many choices. It can be a scary time, especially if the pregnancy is unplanned. Lutheran Social Services offers pregnancy counseling to help in this difficult time.

Pregnancy Counseling

I'm pregnant, but I have hope. Picture of young woman contemplating. Our trained pregnancy counselors can be reached online and will travel to your home or a convenient meeting place. Our services are available throughout South Dakota. When you meet with your counselor, you can discuss all your options.

If you choose to parent, your counselor will connect you with the resources you need. It is important for pregnant women to maintain prenatal care for both the mother and the baby. In addition, our counselors will continue appointments with you throughout your pregnancy.

Choosing Adoption

The choice of adoption is a wonderful gift. While adoption should never be taken lightly, the options for adoption have changed a lot. You may select an adoptive family from our book of profiles. You can meet the adoptive family if you wish. Together, you can both decide the level of contact you would like.

Your counselor will assist you every step of the way. We will walk you through the decision making process and all your options. Our goal is to help you make the decision that is best for you and your baby.

Following Through on Your Decision

While adoption can seem overwhelming, Lutheran Social Services is here to help. We will guide you through the various forms and legal papers that are required. We can also introduce you to other birth mothers who have made adoption plans.

As a birth mother, you do have the option to build a relationship with your adoptive family. In addition, you can mentor other birth mothers with your experience. Your pregnancy counselor will continue to work with you throughout and provide post-placement counseling.
