You just found out you’re pregnant, and it wasn’t something you were planning – so many thoughts, emotions, and decisions to make. Who do you turn to? And where do you start? You’ve heard that LSS does adoptions (and has for nearly a century in South Dakota), but you’re not sure adoption is what you want to do. So why should you contact LSS anyway? 1. LSS pregnancy counseling is FREE, 2. You don’t have to choose adoption, and 3. Outreach is available throughout South Dakota. Free sounds like a good place to start!
So what do you get for free? First of all, you get non-judgmental, un-biased assistance and help exploring options. You get to take time in making your decision and are provided ideas and materials to help see the facts more clearly. You can get assistance in planning a budget and finding community resources and support systems to be a successful parent, if parenting is what you decide is best for you and your baby. LSS staff keeps up to date on new programs and services in the communities and will reach out to find services that provide assistance with expenses.
If you decide adoption is what you’d like to consider, your pregnancy counselor can provide profiles of adoptive families who have been approved to adopt in the state of South Dakota. You can feel confident in knowing these families have been trained in how to be successful adoptive parents, and taught how to have a positive open relationship with birth families. Your pregnancy counselor will mediate with the adoptive family, the birth father, assist you in making a hospital plan, and mediate with hospital staff. They will also assist you with the court process. You can also be matched with a mentor – another birth parent who has chosen adoption to help you with your decision. There is also a support group for birth parents because sometimes we just need to visit with others who “get” where we’ve been. When you chose adoption with LSS, we are here for you as long as you need us.
Diane Pillar, LSS Pregnancy Counselor, shared her thoughts about why a birth parent should choose LSS, “I really do care about each and every one of my clients. I care about them as a person, I respect the tough decisions they have to make, and I care what happens to the client and their child/children now and in the future.”
It’s not an easy decision to make. You owe it to yourself and your baby to get the best information available to plan for your future. And best of all, there is NO COST. If you are facing an unexpected pregnancy, contact LSS via phone at 1-888-201-5061 or 605-221-2346, email info@LssSD.org, or find us on Facebook.
