The month of May is designated as National Foster Care Month. This began in 1988 and has been recognized and celebrated ever since. A focus for this month is to give foster parents recognition for opening their homes to foster children in need and caring for them on a daily basis.
The theme for 2016 is Honoring, Uniting, and Celebrating Families. At LSS we currently have 31 licensed foster families in the Sioux Falls and Rapid City areas. We appreciate all these families do for the children in their care all 12 months of the year! However, we want to take this opportunity to celebrate all they are doing and share it with all of you!
You may have heard the Starfish poem before, but I want to share it with you today as we honor foster families and what they are doing for our community one child at a time.
The Starfish Flinger
As an old man walked the beach at dawn,
he noticed a young man ahead of him picking up
starfish and flinging them back into the sea.
Finally catching up with the youth, he asked him
why he was doing this. The answer was that the
stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun.
“But the beach goes for miles and there are
millions of starfish,” countered the other. “How can
your effort make any difference?”
The young man looked at the starfish in his hand
and then threw it to safety in the waves.
“It makes a difference to this one,” he said.
Thank you Foster Parents! What you do for children every day is noticed and appreciated!
