#StartWithHeart – And Better Together

We hope that most everyone in the Sioux Falls area has heard all of the buzz about the 2016 Sioux Empire United Way campaign, #StartWithHeart! LSS is just one of the many partner agencies that benefits annually from the generous community support the United Way provides. Funding from the United Way impacts Mentoring, Center for Financial Resources, Childcare and Counseling Services at LSS.

We are especially excited to partner with United Way this year to launch Better Together! Better Together matches adult volunteers with independently living seniors aged 65+ (we call them Neighbors) for the purpose of socialization and having a great time. In just 8 short months since implementation, we are amazed at the impact this program has made on all participants.

Imagine moving to Sioux Falls after living in another community for 60+ years. Or no longer having the independence to run to the store due to no longer being able to drive or walk long distances. Or  your spouse and friends that you have spent decades doing life together are no longer with you. Those are just a few of the reasons older adults have turned to LSS for this service. And the result? Happiness. They say that they feel happy and are getting new opportunities and new friends at a time in their life they did not expect it.

Take a few minutes to watch this video that features Better Together match Austin and Terra and Doris. The best part is when Doris says that “she finally got a good friend.”

Thanks to all of the businesses and individuals that give to the United Way to make programs like Better Together a possibility!
