A celebration of diversity, culture, music, and food was enjoyed at LSS Center for New American’s annual Taste of Cultures event held this year at the District in Sioux Falls. With Phil Schreck as MC for the night, guests enjoyed a variety of ethnic appetizers while listening to diverse local musical talent and vying for amazing raffled prizes, including a painting by local artist Hector Curriel. Terry Nebelsick, superintendent of Huron Schools, shared stories of revitalization as this city became a “first-receiver” of Karen refugees from Burma, highlighting not only the important work of welcoming that LSS has had the privilege of doing since 1948, but also the assets, dreams, and entrepreneurial spirit refugees bring with them to their new home.
Awards of appreciation were also given to the following supporters of LSS:
-Outstanding Community Partners- Pixelbox, Passenger, and Fresh Produce
-Outstanding Employer- Floral Plant Growers
-Outstanding Congregational Partner- Central Baptist Church
-Outstanding Mentors- Paul and Lara Hanson
-Outstanding ESL Volunteers- Arthur and Carol Hovey
Thank you to the nearly 500 benefactors of the event and those who came out in support of LSS Center for New Americans and joining us in the work of welcoming!
