Four years ago, the LSS Foster Care Program in conjunction with R Scrapbook Store and Life 96.5 started the Life Book Project. As we prepare for our 4th annual Life Book volunteer event, we are humbled with the community support we have received through this event. Not only has this event brought many life book supplies and pages to kids and families that would not have otherwise had access to them, but what our staff, kids, and families have gained through this has been immeasurable.
For those that may not know, Life Books are a collection of information, photos, stories, and memories kept together to tell a child’s story. Life Books are important for children who cannot live with their birth family as it provides children a place to keep their story together. It can be hard for children to make sense of the changes that have occurred and keep track of their life story as they move to different places. A Life Book is a place to bring that information together.
Here are some thoughts from people involved in the Life Book Project:
“I am so thankful for the volunteers who take time to share their talents by making Life Book pages for my foster children. I wish I had more time to make pages for the children in my home.” LSS Foster Parent
“I am happy to have this book that is all about me!” 9 year old child in foster care
“It is wonderful to see the pride in the children’s eyes when their pictures are placed on the beautifully crafted pages that volunteers have made. Often children will have an envelope of random loose photos. These photos are placed on a creative page which frames them, giving honor to the child’s memories.” LSS Social Worker
Because of the Life Book Project, positive connections have been made for children as they are able to put together their pictures and history into a life book that can be as unique and creative as they are. Children feel valued as they realize that people they don’t even know are willing to use their own time to make something beautiful for them. Foster families have been able to breathe a sigh of relief in being able to put together a life book for the children in their home without the stress of finding supplies and making the pages look just right. So many community volunteers and groups have come together to support these children and families. And although they may never meet each other, the support is felt!
During the month of April, supplies for life books can be dropped off at R Scrapbook Store (3709 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls). A Volunteer Event will be held on Friday, April 17th from 11am to 10pm at R Scrapbook Store (3709 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls). During the volunteer event, volunteers use the donated supplies to make Life Book pages for children being served by the LSS Foster Care Program. Please join us for a fun time of creativity and fellowship. No experience necessary!
