LSS continues to celebrate Theodor Seuss Geisel, the famous children’s author of the popular Dr. Seuss books. These books have a rhythmic form of poetry, fun imaginative illustrations, and are neatly wrapped into important messages. Today, LSS Development & Foundation is featuring Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
It begins with a strong message that we all have choices how we proceed throughout our day.
“You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
And, YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”
Geisel leads readers, young and old, on a journey of being the best of the best. However, he also reminds us that there are bang-ups and hang-ups, and bumps and slumps along the way. His lyrics are straightforward about times of confusion when all seems dark.
“You’ll get mixed up, of course, as you already know.”
As Geisel continues taking the reader on a journey of ups and downs, he also is quite clear—Life’s a Great Balancing Act. He encourages the reader to be clever and smart in their choices, and never to mix the right foot from the left.
Oh, the Places You’ll Go! was the last book Geisel published in his lifetime and is a wonderful reminder that life is truly a balancing act of overcoming challenges and celebrating achievements.
However, life is not a children’s story book. There are many challenges that can seem overwhelming and some individuals and families are not equipped to handle them. LSS can help guide them through their journey of bang-ups and hang-ups, and bumps and slumps.
At LSS, we’ve seen smiles emerge on the faces of those battling depression. We’ve seen hope surface for those bearing the weight of what seems like a mountain of debt. We’ve seen comfort and peace warm the hearts of those who have lost loved ones.
In women who have been abused physically and emotionally, LSS has seen inner pride and strength grow. We’ve seen children transform when they learn to overcome fear after suffering from years of abuse and neglect.
We’ve seen pain and worry subside on the faces of our neighbors when they learn volunteers are on their way to help after disaster devastated their way of life. And, we’ve seen couples waiting for a child to call their own embrace their new journey as a family.
However, back to the book—Geisel concludes Oh, the Places You’ll Go! just as strongly as he began. When the reader understands the balancing act, they will move mountains! “Yes! You will, indeed.”
It doesn’t matter who you are, “You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day!”
As LSS approaches its 100th anniversary of providing opportunities for donors and clients alike to move mountains, it continues to carry out the mission of strengthening individuals, families and communities. Last year, LSS touched more than 56,000 lives right here in South Dakota, helping those who struggle with confusing and overwhelming challenges in their lives.
