More than a painting

February 28, 2014

Last week, over 30 mentors and students in our OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAUSucceed program took in a class at a new canvas painting business in Sioux Falls. This was the first experience with a painting class for many (although one match has done a few on their own!), and the results were great! Read the rest of this entry »

Augustana College Students Host Literacy Carnival for OSL After-School

February 25, 2014

Last week the kids at our OSL After-School Program had an exciting day! Students from the Augustana College Education Association hosted a literacy carnival to bring a fun filled afternoon of learning to our elementary age students. Our After-School and Summer Programs show students that learning is fun with a variety of hands-on activities every day. This special experience from the Augustana students certainly made learning fun!

The literacy activities were each related to a specific book and included a photo booth, face painting, cow milking, tossing cats into hats, basketball, feeding a hungry caterpillar and much more fun! Each student received a book to take home, a pencil and a book mark.

As you can see from our photos, every OSL After-School student wore a smile as did the Augustana students. This is certainly a relationship that we hope continues to grow.

Our OSL After-School and Summer Program is our newest location and we serve students from Hawthorne and Jefferson Elementary thanks to a partnership with Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. For more information visit http://www.lsssd.org/children_services/childcare_and_education/ .

Third Annual Life Book Event – February 25

February 24, 2014

ThThird Annual Life Book Event – February 25th!!!!

The Sioux Falls Foster Care Program is gearing up for our Third Annual Lifebook Event. This is a time that volunteers celebrate together by creating Lifebook pages and kits that are then provided to children served in the LSS Foster Care Programs as well as other agency programs. Last year there were so many supplies and pages donated that LSS Foster Care Program was able to provide supplies and pages to other local foster agencies! We are planning to do the same this year!

This volunteer event will be held:
Tuesday, February 25 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm
At Peace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 5509 W 41st Street, Sioux Falls
Lifebook supplies will be available for you to create pages

A Life Book is a collection of information, stories, photos, and memories kept together to tell a child’s life story. Life Book pages go to kids living in foster care or residential placements in South Dakota to help them put together their story. Life Books are important because it can be challenging for children and youth, who are not able to live with their biological family, to keep information about their life together if they move to different places. A Life Book is a place for these kids to store their information and add information and pictures as they grow older. A Life Book is a very special thing to those children and youth!

Volunteers can register for this event by contacting Marcy.Maras@LssSD.org

Thank you! Dede Mogck, Director of Adoption and Foster Care Programs

Refugee Resettlement Orientation: What We Need to Know About Life in America

February 21, 2014

They hold a special place in my heart.  They were my first friend, my translator and language teacher, my much-needed doorkeepers into the culture.  They helped me find food, find a bathroom, or find the bus.  They put up with my incessant and uninformed questions and celebrated my small steps towards greater self-sufficiency.  Without my host cousin, Joanna, my colleague, Andreea, and my assistant, Rena, Costa Rica, Romania, and Taiwan would have remained foreign to this foreigner and the road to finding a new home would have been ever so much longer, bumpier, and lonelier.

What do you think is important to know when resettling to a new country?
