You Don’t Have To Be Perfect!

Have you ever thought about becoming a foster family – then you start to question yourself because you don’t think you have what it takes?  Well, some of my favorite television commercials are the ones from AdoptUsKids with the tag line, “You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent.”  The commercials then go on to say there are thousands of teens in the U.S. who would love to put up with you.  That is so true!  As parents we are harder on ourselves than the kids we care for are! In fact, I think that when we make mistakes or do goofy things and own up to it – kids feel they can too!  If we aren’t perfect they don’t have to be either.

So if you feel you are being called to be a foster family – don’t let that little questioning voice in the back of your head win.  Do some research, ask questions, talk to another foster family, check out agencies that do foster care, go to a foster parent network meeting. You may find out that what it takes to be a foster family is something you hold deep in your heart!  Some of characteristics of an effective foster family are a concern for the welfare of children, an ability to provide a safe environment for children, an ability to work as a team member and a good sense of humor doesn’t hurt either!
