Where can you enjoy a conversation about the works of Michelangelo and DaVinci, the importance of thinking before acting and the ooey-gooey way clay feels when you squish it between your fingers? At the Hilltop Summer Program!
Hilltop is the first of our four locations this summer where students are enjoying a week of learning and fun with Mr. Darwin Wolf, visual artist. Wolf is conducting workshops for our kindergarten through middle school students as part of the Artists-In-Schools and Communities Program through the South Dakota Arts Council.
When talking about the fun they are having as they learn about art, one student said, “did you know the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are named after famous artists? Cool, huh?” It is clear the kids are engaged and absorbing the great information and experience Wolf brings to the classroom! Wolf’s commissions and award-winning work can be viewed on his Web site, www.wolfbronze.com. Wolf’s primary goals are for his students to create sculptures they can be proud of as well as for them to gain new insights into the creative process. Therefore, his residencies delve into the complexities of art and explore the works of the great masters even as he helps his students demystify the process of art creation. Quick and fun history lessons as taught as students become sculptors. Wolf incorporates drawing and eye development exercises that improve skills and give students the opportunity to become comfortable with their art.
Lutheran Social Services Childcare and Education Services are excited that we are able to offer this additional learning opportunity to our fantastic summer activities. This is possible through the generous support of two great organizations. South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism and State Development, and the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition, support for this work was provided in part by the LEGO Children’s Fund.
