Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether is joining more than 600 mayors across the country for the first-ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service. Tuesday, April 9, 2013, marked a nationwide effort to highlight the impact of service in tackling city problems.
“Stewardship and service are vital resources for our city,” said Mayor Mike Huether. “For example, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members have a positive and lasting impact, making our city a better place to live. I am truly grateful for the sacrifice of all citizens who work to make our great city stronger, safer and healthier.”
National service plays a big role in helping meet needs in Sioux Falls. AmeriCorps members at Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota recruit, support and retain 1,489 volunteer mentors who work with youth to improve GPAs, decrease school discipline referrals and provide exposure to the arts.
Mayor Huether encourages residents to recognize the positive impact of national service in our city and to thank those who serve.
