Just Because – Poetry from a Youth in Foster Care

We can have an impact on children and youth in foster care.  But these young persons can also have a great impact on those around them as well!  Foster parents and social workers often share stories of foster children and youth who are happy, who are caring, who are bright, who are motivated  and who are resilient!  They are put in our lives as blessings!  Here is a poem from one such young person who is in a foster home through Lutheran Social Services.

 Just Because

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean I hate the past.

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean my life won’t last.

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean I have no control.

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean it’s not my life I wish to hold.

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean I care what you think.

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean I smoke or drink.

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean I am a fool.

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean I’ll quit on school.

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean I am afraid of pain.

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean my past wasn’t a gain.

Just because I am a foster child, doesn’t mean this isn’t the beginning.

But because I am a foster child, in my heart , I am winning.
